About Miranda
I am a Certified Professional Dog Trainer (CPDT-KA). My background is in Psychology—the scientific study of the mind and behavior. I graduated from Monmouth University in 2012 with a B.A. in Psychology and then pursued my Masters and PhD in Social Psychology at the University at Buffalo, SUNY. My entire adult life has revolved around studying and analyzing how the environment impacts our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors (and vice versa).
My dog training philosophy revolves around positive-reinforcement methods, canine enrichment, and agency. This approach has been heavily informed by the two drastically different learning environments I personally experienced during my own educational journey.
Graduate school adopted a punishment-based approach devoid of enrichment and agency. We were explicitly told that no work-life balance existed—that the only life in graduate school is work. Our accomplishments were rarely (if ever) praised and we were chastised for any misstep like a dogs on choke chains—yanked back until we helplessly surrendered.
Undergrad, however, cultivated a positive, encouraging, and motivating culture. I was constantly emboldened to try new things and explore any and all creative ideas. Even when making mistakes, the focus was on the learning and effort that took place. This is the kind of learning and training environment I strive to re-create for all of my students, canine and human alike.
By working together, my hope is to help guide you and your dogs to a more cooperative and happy life together. I aim to be your biggest cheerleader and encourage your continued efforts, not make you feel bad for mistakes (past or present!). We are all constantly learning together and doing the best that we can, and that can go a long way with the proper guidance.
